The Gmail app feels so archaic. It doesn't even have a search like the desktop version does (when moving email). Gmail is instant - make sure it's not set for battery optimization. Also check settings in Gmail under your account name, not general settings, all the way at the bottom there a sync Gmail option, make sure that's checked.
